Cocoon Phase: Definitions, Explanations, Goals

First post. Strictly business. Pre-cocoon briefing:

Cocoon Phase: While I have braces on my teeth for the next five months I will be intentionally reclusive and focused on self-betterment: physical, through a disciplined work-out regimen and the obvious orthodontic work; spiritual, through daily study of the Word and consistent fellowship, prayer, and service; educational, through GMAT preparation and business school research.

Why? I'll get into that later.

Why blog? Accountability - I want to feel responsible to deliver results. Entertainment - hopefully someone, somewhere, somehow might be amused. And because I amuse myself (that's the reason why anyone blogs anyway...). Information - the braces/surgery combo I'm getting is relatively new and firsthand honest experience is tough find.

When? Surgery and braces scheduled on January 8th, 2009. Braces off/cocoon opening near the end of May.

What procedure am I getting?
PAOO stands for Periodontally Accelerated Osteogenic Orthodontics, also known as Wilckodontics, which is a minor oral surgery. In very simple terms, the surgeon peels the gums back from the teeth and off of the bone that holds the root of the tooth in place. The surgeon cuts holes into the bone, which are "perforations" or "distraction gaps." My surgeon/orthodontist/dentist (he's a baller) pioneered a technique that uses a laser instead of a scalpel. The perforations soften the bone and allow braces to move the teeth immediately. The bone regenerates stronger than before around the new tooth position. This is called distraction gap bone grafting. Without the procedure my time in braces would be around 18-24 months. With the procedure my time in braces will be between 5 and 6 months.

Goals: First and foremost, to pursue the Lord in this time and be made more like Christ. I want to gain wisdom and more clear direction on HIS purpose for my life. I also want to be a good steward of the resources and the body that He has given me. So, I want to have a great smile and get jacked (logic gap? maybe. we'll discuss that). Lastly, I want the cocoon to be a springboard of preparation for my next phase, which hopefully involves international travel and business school.
